Blood Flashcards
What is the normal body temp?
37 Degrees Centigrade
What is the normal blood temp?
38 degree centigrade
Normal blood pH
7.35-7.45
Normal MALE blood volume
5-6 Liters
Normal FEMALE blood volume
4-5 Liters
What are the two parts in blood?
Plasma and Formed Elements
What are formed elements
RBC, WBC, Platelets. Cells that are traveling in the plasma.
Erythrocytes
RBC
Leukocytes
WBC
Thrombocytes
Platelets
What is a plasma?
Liquid part of blood and clotting proteins
What consists of a whole blood sample?
55% plasma and 45% formed platelets (mainly RBC)
What is plasma made up of?
90% water and 10% solutes
What are the solutes in plasma?
Plasma proteins (albumin, globulin, clotting proteins), Oxygen, CO2, hormones, wastes, etc…
What are albumins responsible for?
Carrying some tygophobic hormones in blood since they don’t dissolve.
What are globulins responsible for?
2 families: another category of proteins that bind hormones, and gammaglobulins
Gammaglobulins:
Antibodies
What are clotting proteins?
Made up mainly of fibrinogen.
What makes fibrinogen and what is it converted to?
It is made by the liver and is converted to protein called fibrin
What do you call outside the blood vessel?
Interstitial fluid
What does plasma protein attract
Water
Normal plasma protein concentration
6-8g of protein per 100mL of blood
Normal RBC count in males
4.5 million- 6.3 million cells per mm3
Function of plasma protein
Clotting, help maintains osmotic concentration of blood which helps maintain blood flow.
What is an Electrolyte
Molecule that when put into water separates into charged parts.
Ex: protein, inorganic salts.
Normal RBC count for females
4.2 mill to 5.5 mill cells per mm3
Why is RBC count higher in male than female?
Due to testosterone stimulating RBC production
What is a hematocrit?
Volume % in RBC in whole blood
Normal hematocrit in male
40-54%
Normal hematocrit in female
38-47%
Normal hemoglobin in male
14-18g per 100ml
Normal hemoglobin in female
12-16g per 100mL
What does hemoglobin do
Carries oxygen
Wha is a erythropoeisis?
Stimulates bone barrow to make rbc
