Describe how to initally treat a blocked bladder
decompress the bladder
pain relief - opiod- methadone
get catheter in
fluids
find underlying cause
Describe how to treat hyperkalaemia
fluids
calcium gluconate CRI
glucose, insulin and bicarb
why do we give salbutamol to hyperkalaemic patients
to protect the heart
what pre-med do we give to blocked bladder patients and why
midazolam as it is not renally excreted and it has no cardiovascular depressive effects
List 2 advantages of leaving catheters in blocked patients
prevents re-blocking
able to measure output of urine
List 2 disadvantages of leaving catheters in blocked patients
pro-inflammatory - can trigger FIC (feline idiopathic cystitis) later
how much fluid can we use when doing retrohydropulsion
10-15ml
after unblocking the patient what do we need to do
POCUS, radiographs, urinalysis and C&S to determine cause of blockage
why do we put atracuium into the urethra before placing a urinary catheter
it is a muscle relaxant and may help pass the catheter
