Inventory/Belonging List
A detailed list of articles, goods, property, etc.
Scale
A device used to measure the weight of a person
Height (Ht)
The distance from the bottom of the feet to the top of the head when standing erect.
Weight (Wt)
The mass or quantity of heaviness of an individual.
Restraints
A measure or condition that keeps someone or something under control or within limits.
Restraint Alternatives
Any intervention used in place of a restraint or that reduces the need for a restraint.
Intake
The fluid a person consumes.
Output
All fluid that is eliminated from the body; including urine, feces, vomitus, perspiration, moisture that is exhaled in the air, and wound drainage.
Fluid Balance
Taking in and eliminating equal amounts of fluid.
Ounces (oz)
A unit of volume that is equal to 30 millileters (mL)
Milliliter (mL)
A unit of volume used in measuring fluid intake and output.
Sample/Specimen
Gathered matter of a medical patient’s tissue, fluid, or other material derived from the patient used for laboratory analysis.
Collection Device (Hat)
In health care, a collection container that is sometimes inserted into a toilet to collect and measure urine or stool.
Occult Blood
Small traces of blood that a person cannot see in their stool.
Clean Catch/Midstream
A urine method used to prevent germs from the penis or vagina from getting into a urine sample.
Urinalysis
An examination of the urine under a microscope and by chemical means.
24-Hour Urine Collection
A urine specimen consisting of all urine voided in a 24-hour period.
Straight Catheter
A catheter that does not remain inside the person; it is removed immediately after urine is drained or collected.
Indwelling Catheter
A type of catheter that remains inside the bladder for a period of time; urine drains into a bag.
Condom Catheter
Catheter that has an attachment on the end that fits into the penis; also called external or Texas catheter.
Suprapubic Catheter
A surgically created connection between the urinary bladder and the skin used to drain urine from the bladder in individuals with obstruction of normal urinary flow.
Female External Catheter
An external urine collection device that attaches to the perineum and drains urine by a tube attached to a bag or suction container.
Down Drain Bag
Urine drainage bags collect urine. The bag will attach to a catheter (tube) that is inside the bladder.
Leg bag
A small bag that connects to an indwelling catheter to collect urine. It is strapped to the leg and can be hidden under clothing.
