Foundations of Resident Care.
Communication
The process of exchanging information with others by sending and receiving messages.
Message
The exchange of information in writing, in speech, or by signals.
Receiver
The listener, reader, or observer–that is, the individual (or the group of individuals) to whom the message is directed.
Sender
A person who sends or transmits a message.
Non-Verbal Communication
Communicating without using words.
Verbal Communication
Communication involving the use of spoken or written words or sounds.
Body Language
The process of communicating nonverbally through conscious or unconscious gestures and movements.
Objective
(of a person or their judgment) not influenced by personal feelings or opinions in considering and representing facts. (Signs)
Subjective
Information that a person cannot or did not observe but is based on something reported to the person that may or may not be true. (Symptoms)
Social Determinants of Health (SDOH)
The conditions in the environments where people are born, live, learn, work, play, worship, and age that affects a wide range of health, functioning, and quality of life outcomes and risks.
Call Light
A bedside button tethered to the wall in a patient’s room, which directs signals to the nursing station.
Cliche
Phrases that are used over and over again and do not really mean anything.
Hearing Impaired
Occurs when you lose part or all of your ability to hear.
Visual Impairment
Occurs when a person loses the ability to see normally.
Mental Health
The normal functioning of emotional and intellectual abilities.
Mental Illness
An illness or disorder that affects a person’s ability to function and often causes inappropriate behavior.
Reporting
Give a spoken or written account of something that one has observed, heard, done, or investigated.
Medical Terminology
The language used to precisely describe the human body including its components, processes, conditions affecting it, and procedures performed upon it.
Medical Abbreviations
Abbreviations, acronyms, and medical terminology used for man conditions, and for instructions on medication prescribed by a doctor.
