Abuse Registry
Includes names of persons who have abused, neglected, exploited, or misappropriated the property of vulnerable adults.
Department of Health (DOH)
A department of the U.S. federal government and the state with the goal of protecting the health of all Americans and providing essential human services.
Utah Nursing Assistant Registry (UNAR)
governing body that provides certification, renewal, and reciprocity services for Certified Nursing Assistants in the State of Utah; also approves and oversees all nursing assistant training programs and instructors. Maintains and manages the abuse registry.
Certification
the action or process of providing someone or something with an official document attesting to the status or level of achievement.
Renewal
An Instance of resuming an activity or state after an interruption such as renewing a nurse assistant certification every two years.
Knowledge Exam
Students in the state of Utah must demonstrate competency in Nursing Assistant-related knowledge in this exam offered by the UNAR to obtain certification.
Skills Exam
Students in the state of Utah must pass this practical assessment offered by the UNAR intended to measure a test-takers competence in specific Nursing Assistant-related skills.
Nursing Assistant Skill Proficiency Performance List (NAPP)
UNAR document signed by an approved instructor, verifying nursing assistant student has shown proficiency in each listed skill prior to completing a CNA program.
Apical
The Adjective for apex, the tip of the pyramidal or rounded structure, such as the lung or the heart. An apical pulse is measured by listening over the apex (lower tip) of the heart with a stethoscope.
Pulse
The Rhythmical throbbing caused by the regular contraction and alternate expansion of an artery. (Korotkoff sounds)
Radial Artery
The artery that runs just beneath the skin at the wrist where the pulse can be felt.
Stethoscope
A medical instrument for listening to the action of someone’s heart or breathing, typically having a small disk-shaped resonator that is placed against the chest and two tubes connected to earpieces.
Exhalation/Exhale/Expiration
Breathe out air from the lungs in a deliberate manner.
Inhalation/Inhale/Inspiration
Breathing in.
Irregular
Not even or regular in shape or pattern
Respirations
The process of breathing air into the lungs and exhaling air out of the lungs.
Axillary
Relating to the armpit.
Centigrade
Relating to, conforming to, or having a thermometric scale on which the interval between the freezing point of water and boiling point of water is divided into 100 degrees.
Digital Thermometer
Are temperature-sensing instruments that are easily portable, have permanent probes, and a convenient digital display.
Ear Canal
A tube running from the outer ear to the middle ear.
Electronic Thermometer
An electronic instrument for determining temperatures.
Fahrenheit
of or denoting a scale of temperature on which water freezes at 32 degrees and boils 212 degrees under standard conditions.
Oral
Pertaining to the mouth.
Rectal
Relating to or affecting the rectum.
Temporal
Pertaining to time, temporary; may also refer to a type of temperature measurement in a thermometer that is placed on the temple or forehead.
Thermometer
An instrument for measuring and indicating temperature.
Tympanic
The temperature obtained by placed an electronic probe in the ear canal.
Blood Pressure
The pressure of the blood in the circulatory system, often measured for diagnosis since it is closely related to the force and rate of the heartbeat and diameter and elasticity of the arterial walls.
Brachial Artery
Is the Major blood vessel of the (upper) arm.
Diastolic
The second measurement of blood pressure; phase when the heart relaxes or rests.
Hypertension
High blood pressure, measuring 130/80 or higher.
Hypotension
Abnormally low blood pressure measuring 100/60 or lower
Sphygmomanometer
An inflatable rubber cuff that is applied to the arm enabling the determination of systolic and diastolic blood pressure; blood pressure cuff.
Systolic
The first measurement of blood pressure; phase when the heart is at work, contracting and pushing the blood from the left ventricle of the heart.
Orthostatic
Relating to or caused by an upright posture.
Pulse Oximeter
A device that uses a light to determine the amount of oxygen in the blood and can also measures a person’s pulse rate.
Pain
Physical suffering or discomfort caused by illness or injury.
