Personal Care Skills part 1
Hygiene
Practices to keep bodies clean and healthy.
Grooming
Practices to care for oneself such as caring for fingernails and hair.
Activities of Daily Living (ADL)
Daily personal care tasks such as bathing; caring for skin, nails, hair, and teeth; dressing; toileting; eating and drinking; walking; and transferring.
AM Care
Cares normally performed in the morning such as bathing, dressing, breakfast, etc.
HS/PM Care
The care provided at nighttime/before bed.
Personal Dignity
Respecting, honoring, and esteeming a resident as a human being; respecting their personal privacy and their right to make as many choices as possible.
Bony Prominences
Areas of the body where the bone lies close to the skin.
Pressure Injury/Ulcer/Sore
A difficult-to-heal (and possibly fatal) sore that forms when part of the body presses against a surface for a long period of time, cutting off the oxygen supply to the tissues. Also called bedsore or decubitus.
Shearing
Rubbing or friction that results from the skin moving one way and the bone underneath it is remaining fixed or moving in the opposite direction.
Draw/Lift/Transfer Sheet.
An extra sheet placed on top of the bottom sheet; used for moving residents in bed.
Foot Drop
A weakness of muscles in the feet and ankles that causes problems with the ability to flex the ankles and walk normally.
Bed Cradle
A frame placed over the body of a patient in bed for application of heat or cold or for protecting injured parts from coming into contact with the bedclothes.
Orthotic
A device that helps support and align a limb and improve its functioning; also called an orthosis.
Perineum
Th genital and anal area.
Perineal care
Care of the genitals and anal area.
Drape
Covering the person with blankets or towels leaving exposed only that part of the body that is being cared for.
Penis
The male genital organ of higher vertebrates, carrying the duct for the transfer of sperm during copulation.
Foreskin
The retractable roll of skin covering the end of the penis.
Uncircumsized
(of a boy or man’s penis)The foreskin has not been removed.w
Circumsized
To cut off the foreskin in of (a male) or the prepuce of a female.
Scrotom
A pouch of skin containing the testicles.
Urinary Meatus
The opening of the meatus of the urethra - The point where urine exits the urethra in males and in females, and also where semen exits the urethra in males
Labia
The inner and outer folds of the vulva, at either side of the vagina.
Vagina
The muscular tube leading from the external genitals to the cervix of the uterus in women.
Rectum
The final section of the large intestine, terminating at the anus.
