Affected
A side of the body or limb that is weakened due to a stroke or injury; also called the weaker or involved side
Unaffected
A side of the body or limb that is unaffected due to a stroke or injury; also referred to as the stronger side.
Embolism
Obstruction of a blood vessel, usually by a blood clot.
Antiembolism Stocking
A special stocking that helps prevent swelling and blood clots and aids in circulation by gently squeezing the legs to increase blood flow.
Dentures
A removable plate or frame holding one or more artificial teeth.
Emesis Basin
A shallow basin of curved, kidney-shaped design, used to collect body fluids or as a container for various other liquids.
Elimination
The process of expelling wastes (made up of the waste products of food and fluids) from the body that is not absorbed.
Bedpan
A receptacle used by bedridden patient as a toilet.
Fracture Pan
A bedpan that is flatter than a regular bedpan.
Urinal
A collection device used for urination when a man is unable to get out of bed.
Bed Protector/Linen Protector
Is an item of removable bedding that sits on top of, or encases, a mattress to protect it.
Bedside Commode (BSC)
A device used for eliminating when a person is able to get out of bed but unable to walk to the bathroom; it consists of a chair-like frame with a toilet seat and a removable collection bucket.
Supine
Position where the person is lying flat on his back with a pillow under the head (dorsal, recumbent)
Lateral
Body position in which a person is lying on either side.
Prone
A body position in which a person is lying on his stomach, or front side of body.
Fowler’s
A semi-sitting body position in which a person’s head and shoulders are elevated 45 to 60 degrees.
Semi-Fowler’s
The position with the person lying on his back. The head of the bed is raised 30-45 degrees, and the knees/feet are raised 10-15 degrees.
High-Fowler’s
A sitting body position in which a person’s head is elevated 60-90 degrees.
Sim’s
A body position in which a person is lying on his left side with the upper knee flexed and raised toward the chest.
Logrolling
Moving a person as a unit, without disturbing the alignment of the body.
Dangle
To sit up with the legs hanging over the side of the bed in order to regain balance and stabilize blood pressure.
Gait/Transfer Belt
A belt made of canvas or other heavy material used to help people who are weak, unsteady, or uncoordinated to stand, sit, or walk; also called a transfer belt.
Pivot
The movement of a person from one site to another, such as from a bed to a wheelchair, when there is a loss of control of one side of the body or when one side of the body is immobile.
