Abdominal Thrust
Method of attempting to remove an object from the airway of someone who is choking
Anaphylaxis
An acute allergic reaction to an antigen (e.g., a bee sting) to which the body has become hypersensitive
Aphasia
A general term for a group of disorders that affect a person’s ability to communicate with others.
Aspiration
The inhalation of food, fluid, or foreign material into the lungs
Burns
An injury caused by exposure to heat or flame
Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)
Medical procedures used when a person’s heart or lungs have stopped working
Cerebrovascular Accident (CVA, Stroke)
A condition that occurs when blood supply to a part of the brain is blocked or a blood vessel leaks or ruptures within the brain
Choking
Having severe difficulty in breathing because of a constricted or obstructed throat or a lack of air
Dysphasia
Impairment of speech that is less marked than in aphasia.
Emesis
The act of vomiting, or ejecting stomach contents through the mouth and/or nose
Fainting
Lose consciousness for a short time because of a temporarily insufficient supply of oxygen to the brain
First Aid
Emergency care given immediately to an injured person
Myocardial Infarction (MI, Heart Attack)
A “heart attack”; occurs when one or more of the coronary arteries become completely blocked, preventing blood from reaching parts of the heart causing the muscle cells to die.
Seizure
Uncontrolled electrical activity in the brain, which may produce a physical convulsion, minor physical signs, thought disturbances, or a combination of symptoms
Base of Support
Refers to the area beneath a person that includes every point of contact that the person makes with the supporting surface. To maintain balance when standing, your base of support is your feet.
