ADLs
Activities of Daily Living; daily personal care tasks such as bathing; caring for skin, nails, hair, and teeth; dressing; toileting; eating and drinking; walking; and transferring.
AM Care
Cares normally performed in the morning such as bathing, dressing, breakfast etc.
Bed Cradle
Is a frame placed over the body of a patient in bed for application of heat or cold or for protecting injured parts from coming into contact with the bed clothes.
Bed Protector
Is an item of removable bedding that sits on top of, or encases, a mattress to protect it.
Bony Prominences
Areas of the body where the bone lies close to the skin.
Circumcised
To cut off the foreskin of (a male) or the prepuce of (a female).
Contracture
The permanent and often painful shortening of a muscle or tendon, usually due to lack of activity.
Drape
Covering the person with blankets or towels leaving exposed only that part of the body that is being cared for.
Draw/Lift/Transfer Sheet
An extra sheet placed on top of the bottom sheet; used for moving residents in bed.
Foreskin
The retractable roll of skin covering the end of the penis.
Grooming
Practices to care for oneself, such as caring for fingernails and hair.
HS/PM Care
PM care also known as HS care is the care provided at night time/before bed-time.
Hygiene
Practices to keep bodies clean and healthy.
Incontinence
The inability to control the bladder or bowels.
Incontinent Pad
A small, impermeable multi-layered sheet with high absorbency that is used as a precaution against urinary incontinence.
Labia
The inner and outer folds of the vulva, at either side of the vagina.
Lice
Parasitic insects found on the heads of people. Head lice infection is very common and easily acquired by coming in close contact with someone who has head lice, infested clothing, or infested belongings. Also known as pediculosis.
Penis
The male genital organ of higher vertebrates, carrying the duct for the transfer of sperm during copulation.
Perineal Care
Care of the genitals and anal area.
Perineum
The genital and anal area.
Pressure Injury/Ulcer/Sore
A difficult-to-heal (and possibly fatal) sore that forms when part of the body presses against a surface for a long period of time, cutting off the oxygen supply to the tissues. Also called bedsore or decubitus ulcer.
Rectum
The final section of the large intestine, terminating at the anus.
Scrotum
A pouch of skin containing the testicles.
Shearing
Rubbing or friction that results from the skin moving one way and the bone underneath it remaining fixed or moving in the opposite direction.
Uncircumcised
(Of a boy or man’s penis) The foreskin has not been removed.
Urinal
A collection device used for urination when a man is unable to get out of bed.
Urinary Incontinence
Inability to hold urine in the bladder due to loss of voluntary control over the urinary sphincters resulting in the involuntary passage of urine.
Urinary Meatus
Is the opening or meatus of the urethra - the point where urine exits the urethra in males and in females, and also where semen exits the urethra in males.
Vagina
The muscular tube leading from the external genitals to the cervix of the uterus in women.
Foot Drop
A weakness of muscles in the feet and ankles that causes problems with the ability to flex the ankles and walk normally.
