24 hr. Urine Collection
A urine specimen consisting of all urine voided in a 24-hour period.
Clean Catch/Midstream
A urine method used to prevent germs from the penis or vagina from getting into a urine sample.
Collection Device (Hat)
In health care, a collection container that is sometimes inserted into a toilet to collect and measure urine or stool.
Inventory/Belonging List
A detailed list of articles, goods, property, etc.
Intake and Output Sheet (I&O)
Documentation of measuring and recording all fluids that enter and leave the body.
Restraints
A measure or condition that keeps someone or something under control or within limits.
Restraint Alternatives
Any intervention used in place of a restraint or that reduces the need for a restraint.
Sample/Specimen
Gathered matter of a medical patient’s tissue, fluid, or other material derived from the patient used for laboratory analysis.
Urinalysis
Examination of the urine under a microscope and by chemical means.
Closed Bed
A bed completely made with the bedspread and blankets in place.
Condom Catheter
Catheter that has an attachment on the end that fits onto the penis; also called external or Texas catheter.
Down Drain Bag
Urine drainage bags collect urine. The bag will attach to a catheter (tube) that is inside the bladder.
Fan Fold
The process of folding linen like a fan to the side or bottom of the bed.
Graduate
The process of folding linen like a fan to the side or bottom of the bed.
Indwelling Catheter
A type of catheter that remains inside the bladder for a period of time; urine drains into a bag.
Intravenous (IV)
The delivery of medication, nutrition, or fluids through a person’s vein.
Leg Bag
A small bag that connects to an indwelling catheter to collect urine. It is strapped to the leg and can be hidden under clothing.
Mitered Corner
A corner that is made by folding and tucking the sheet so that it lies flat and neat against the mattress.
Occupied Bed
A bed made while a person is in the bed.
Open Bed
A bed made with linen folded down to the foot of the bed, ready to receive a patient or resident.
Side Rails
Devices connected to the sides of a bed that can be raised or lowered, intended to prevent a patient from falling.
Straight Catheter
A catheter that does not remain inside the person; it is removed immediately after urine is drained or collected.
Suprapubic Catheter
A surgically created connection between the urinary bladder and the skin used to drain urine from the bladder in individuals with obstruction of normal urinary flow.
Toe Tuck (Pleat)
Top pleat made at the end of the bed over the toes as a last step of making an occupied bed, allows toes to move freely.
