Block 1 orientation to the cranium Flashcards
What is the superficial temporal artery a branch of?
External corotid
Where are the veins in the scalp and what are they called
Emissary veins in the connective tissue
Diploic veins in between layers of compact bone
What is the vein that travels with the superficial temporal nerve and what is it a branch of?
The auriculotemporal nerve, from the mandibular branch of the trigeminal nerve CN IV
What is the middle meningeal artery a branch of?
The maxillary artery
What are the two layers of the dura?
Periostial and meningeal
What is the falx cerebrii and what does it attach to?
A divider of the hemispheres made of the meningeal layer of the dura attached to the crista galli of the ethmoid bone.
What are the three dividing menings (dural reflections) of the brain?
Falx cerebrii dividing the cerebral hemispheres
Tentorium cerebrii dividing the cerebellum from the cortex
Falx cerebelli indenting the posterior part of the cerebellum
What are the region of the skull cavity?
Above the Tentorium cerebrii is the supratentorial region, below is the infratentorial region
What is an extradural hematoma?
Occurs between dura and bone, involves rupture of a meningeal artery
Looks like a balloon, nice and round
What is a subdural hematoma?
Occurs between dura and arachnoid membrane. Involves rupture of cerebral vein. Looks very random, all over the brain
What is a subarachnoid hematoma?
Occurs between subarachnoid and pia, involves rupture of cerebral artery.
How many cranial fossas are there?
Three. Anterior, middle, and posterior.
Where does the middle meningeal artery pass through?
The foramen spinosum
Where are the cerebral veins located?
Pial layer
Name the vessel with each hematoma:
Extradural
Subdural
Subarachnoid
Meningeal artery
Cerebral vein
Cerebral artery
