Block 1 CNS Truama Flashcards
What do ependymal cells do?
Line ventricles
What are the macrophage equivalent in the CNS?
Microglia
What is another stain used to see dendrites/axons?
Silver stain
How can you tell an astrocyte and an oligodendrocyte apart Histologically?
Astrocyte are a little bigger and have an open chromatin pattern
Oligodendrocytes are smaller and have very dense chromatin
What is interesting about ependymal cells?
They have cilia and microvilli
What is a sign of neuron death due to injury or an infarction?
Shrunken red neurons
What is an axonal reaction?
A reaction in the cell body when the axon is cut. It gets big and makes a lot of protein. The spheroids are within the axons.
What are Cowdry bodies?
Herpes virus inclusions of protein aggregates
Called owl’s eye
What are Negri bodies?
Protein aggregate inclusions from rabies virus
What are neurofibrillary tangles?
Protein aggregating into fibers. Like amyloid.
What is gliosis?
Response of glial cells to damage where you get hypertrophy or hyperplasia. Many of them congregate around damage.
What are gemistocytic astrocytes?
Big and plump astrocytes
What are Rosenthal fibers?
See in injury or other diseases. Just contain proteins.
What is Corpora amylacea?
Little bubbles or pearls that form in the Brain.maple blue.
Happen normally in aging.
Glycosylamine glycine
When might you see ependymal cells react?
CMV infection
