Block 1 Infreatemooral Region Flashcards
What are the branches of the mandibular branch of the trigeminal nerve? V3.
Inferior alveolar - goes into mandibular foramen
Lingual - sensory, supplies anterior 2/3 of tongue
Buccal nerve -nose sorry to the cheek
Mylohyoid - a branch of the inferior alveolar, supplies two muscles
Where is the auriculotemporal nerve and what is it from?
It is a sensory nerve serving the lateral head region
Also carries postgsnglionic parasympathetic fibers to the parotid gland whose cell bodies are in the otic ganglion located in the medial side of V3 after it’s exit through the foramen ovale.
Preganglionic fibers are found it CN IX
V3 is the mandibular division of the trigeminal nerve
What does the medial pterygoid do?
Closes the jaw.
Inserts into medial side of the mandible
Supplied by V3
What is the chorda tympani?
A branch of the facial nerve that joins the lingual nerve.
You have taste fibers from anterior 2/3 of the tongue
You have preganglionic fibers
Lingual does feeling of 2/3 while this one is taste
What CNs are parasympathetic?
III, VII, IX, X, and S2,3,4
Where do taste fibers have their cell bodies?
The geniculate ganglion
If you have a sensory nerve what do you have to have?
A sensory ganglion outside the CNS.
Where do the preganglionic cell bodies of the glossopharygeal nerve start and go?
Start in inferior salvitory nucleus and go to the otic ganglion then to the parotid gland
What is trigeminal neuralgia (tic douloureux)?
Worst pain known to mankind
Involves V2
Initiated by touching the skin of the cheek or around the tip of the nose.
What is Bell Palsy?
Paralysis of the facial muscles affecting one side.
Usually involves facial nerve in the distal facial canal.
What does the maxillary artery pass through?
The infratemporal fossa
What passes through the two heads of the lateral pterygoid?
The maxillary artery
What passes through the foramen spinosum?
The middle meningeal artery
What is the auriculotemporal a branch of?
v3
What nerve fibers does the auriculotemporal nerve carry besides sensory nerves?
Postganglionic parasympathetic fibers to the parotid gland for salivary action
These have their cell bodies in the otic ganglion
Located of the medial side of V3 as it exits the foramen oval
