What is hypomania?
Mild mania
How long must you show Syx to be considered hypomanic?

What are signs of a hypomanic?
Change in function and personality but not severe enough to cause impairment; To be diagnosed, again, it must cause distress or dysfunction
What is a Major Depressive Episode?
Pervasive sad, down, irritable mood for at least 2 weeks and must cause distress/dysfunction
What Syx are in Bipolar 1 disorder?
MDE or Manic episode or Mixed Episode
What Syx are in Bipolar 2 disorder?
MDE or hypomania episodes
What is Cyclothymia?
Cyclic changes between hypomania and minor depression of at least 2 years duration
What are other characteristics of a person with bipolar disorder?
Increased sexual activity, flashy dressing, increased anger/escalation, more energy to work
What are biologic factors that contribute to bipolar disorder?
Altered NTs, Monoamine Receptor Deficiency Theory, Genetics, Kindling Hypothesis
What is the Kindling Hypothesis?
Seizure and antiepilepsy drug model via Na+ channel blockade. The more Na+ transmission you have, the more likely it is to occur again?
Tx for bipolar?
Atypical antipsychotics put a ceiling (D2 blocker) and basement (5HT2a blocker) on the disorder, Lithium good for stabilizing mood
What medication is especially good for handling manic Symptoms
Lithium, Divalproex (Increase GABA), Carbamazepine (blocks Na+ channels), D2 blockers (increase neuronal health and connectivity)
