What is hypomania?
milder form of mania for 4+ days
usually have crossed the line but don’t think they have a problem
What is Bipolar 1?
Mania and major depressive disorder
What is Bipolar 2?
hypomania and major depressive disorder
What is cyclothymia?
> 2 years of hypomania with minor depression
What are some of the other characteristics of bipolar disorder?
- increased sexual activity/seductive dress
- increased anger/ escalation
- increased energy, more creative, risk taking
- can become psychotic
Which phase of bipolar is more disabling? catastrophic?
disabling-depression
catastrophic- mania
In which phase do patients with bipolar disorder spend more time in?
depressed
Do most patients have a clear memory of their manic episodes?
no, most don’t remember them
What is the kindling hypothesis?
every episode gets worse and worse
What is the hypothesized etiology behind bipolar disorder?
altered NT activity or monoamine receptor deficiency
How does the prevalence in men and women differ for bipolar 1 and 2?
Bipolar 1-equal
Bipolar 2- more in women
What can increase mania?
stress
If an antidepressant is going to be used on a patient with bipolar disorder what should be done first?
use a mood stabilizer first to prevent inducing a manic episode
Does psychotherapy work for bipolar disorder?
Only for the depressed phase
