Biomolecule vocab Flashcards
A substance capable of initiating or speeding up a chemical reaction.
Catalyst
Bio molecule that acts as a catalyst to speed up specific chemical reactions
Enzyme
A molecule acted upon by an enzyme.
Substrate
The specific region of an enzyme where a substrate binds and catalysis takes place or where chemical reaction occurs.
Active Site
The ability to do work or produce change
Energy
A large complex molecule, such as nucleic acids, proteins, carbohydrates, and lipids, with relatively large molecular weight.
Macromolecules
A compound made up of several repeating units (monomers) or promoters.
Polymer
A simple compound whose molecules can join together to form polymers (building blocks)
Monomer
Energy-rich bio molecules. They provide the body with a fast source of chemical energy.
Carbohydrates
fatty organic compound that is mainly involved in energy storage, cell membrane structure and, cell signaling.
Lipid
A molecule with a net dipole as a result of the opposing charges from polar binds arranged asymmetrically.
polar molecule
Biomolecules comprised of amino acid residues joined together by petiole bonds.
Protein
The building blocks of proteins
amino acids
One of the major bio molecules. A chain of nucleotide s which stores genetic information in biological systems
nucleic acids
monomer of nucleic acids made up of a 5-carbon sugar, a phosphate group, and a nitrogenous base
Nucleotide
