Biology Learning Check Review Flashcards
What is the difference between gene flow and genetic drift?
Gene flow is a migration of genes from one population to another whereas genetic drift is the changing of allele frequencies.
What is Natural Selection?
Natural selection is the process through which each species adapt to their environment
Compare and contrast geographical, temporal, and behavioral isolation.
Geographical is the physical separation of members in a population, Temporal is the reproduction in different seasons or time of day, and Behavioral is the difference of their mating rituals. They are all similar because they don’t allow the species (same or different) to ever interbreed together.
What is the difference between gradualism and punctuated equilibrium?
Gradualism is where organisms slowly change over time whereas punctuated is when there is long periods of no change but is then followed by rapid periods of change.
Analogous structures are the result of _________ evolution, which is caused by __________ environments and needs.
Convergent, similar
Homologous structures are the result of __________ evolution, which is caused by __________ environments and needs.
Divergent, different
Define the four types of symbiosis.
Mutualism- Both organisms benefit
Parasitism-One organism benefits while the other doesn’t benefit
Commensalism- One organism benefits while the other is not affected
Predation- Organism is killed and eaten by other organism.
What type of organisms will be in the lowest level in an energy pyramid?
Producers
What type of organisms will be in the highest level in an energy pyramid?
Tertiary or Quaternary consumers
How do the numbers change as you go up the pyramid?
They go down by 10% the higher you go up
What happens to the rest of the energy?
It is given to decomposers
The job of nitrogen-fixing bacteria?
To change nitrogen into nitrates
List the levels of organization in order from smallest to largest
Cell,Tissue, Organ, Organ system, Organism, Population, Community, Ecosystem, Biome, Biosphere
If an organism is a source of energy for a tertiary consumer, what trophic level would the organism belong in?
3rd trophic level
What is the difference between primary and secondary succession?
Primary succession starts at barren rock whereas secondary starts at soil.
Give an example of primary and secondary succession
Primary is a volcanic eruption and Secondary is a wildfire
List the order of Primary Succession
Barren rock, Lichens, Annuals, Perennial, Shrubs and bushes, softwood, and then hardwood
List the order of Secondary Succession
Lichens, Annuals, Perennial, Shrubs and bushes, softwood, and then hardwood.
Will succession increase or decrease the biodiversity of an ecosystem?
Increase
What is the role of decomposers in an ecosystem?
Decomposers digest dead plants and animals to further recycle the nutrients within the ecosystem
