Biomechanics: Centre of Mass and Stability Flashcards
Define centre of mass
The point of balance of a body
Define stability
The ability to maintain a centre of mass over a base of support
Define line of gravity
The line extending vertically downwards from the centre of mass
Name 4 factors that affect stability
- Height of centre of mass
- Area of base of support
- Line of gravity
- Mass
Explain how height of centre of mass affects stability
The lower the centre of mass, the greater the stability.
Explain how the area of base of support affects stability
The more contact points, the wider/greater the base of support and the greater the stability.
Explain how line of gravity affects stability
The closer the line of gravity is to the base of support, the greater the stability
Explain how mass affects stability
The greater the mass of the object/performer, the greater the stability.
