๐ | Biology | Unit 5 Flashcards
What are metabolic reactions?
Metabolic reactions are all the reactions in a living organism that keeps it alive.
What are enzymes?
Enzymes are proteins that function as biological catalysts.
What is a substrate?
A molecule(s) that gets broken down or joined together in the reaction.
What is a catalyst?
A catalyst is a substance that increases the rate of a chemical reaction and is not changed by the reaction.
How does an enzyme act?
Enzymes have a shape that is ๐๐ค๐ข๐ฅ๐ก๐๐ข๐๐ฃ๐ฉ๐๐ง๐ฎ to the substrate. When the substrate and enzyme collide in the ๐๐ค๐ง๐ง๐๐๐ฉ ๐ค๐ง๐๐๐ฃ๐ฉ๐๐ฉ๐๐ค๐ฃ, a ๐จ๐ช๐๐จ๐ฉ๐ง๐๐ฉ๐ ๐๐ค๐ข๐ฅ๐ก๐๐ญ is formed.
Why are enzymes necessary for all living organisms?
Enzymes are necessary for all living organisms because they all maintain reaction speeds of all metabolic reactions at a rate that sustains life.
