Biology-Proteins Flashcards
(16 cards)
What is the polymer of a protein?
polypeptide
What is the monomer of proteins?
Amino acid
What is the structure of an Amino Acid?
H H O H

What are the functions of a protein?
EVEN SILLY DOGS CHASE TURTLES SHEEPS + SKUNKS E-Enzyme S-Storage D-Defense C-Contracile T-Transport S-Signal S-Structural
What does an enzyme do?
Changes the rate of chemical reactions w/o being changed itself
What does a storage protein do?
Source of amino acids for embryos
What does a defense protein do?
fights infections (antibodies)
What does a contractile protein do?
provides muscular movement
What does a Transport protein do?
Brings oxygen to other parts of the body (Hemoglobin)
What does a Signal protein do?
Messages from one cell to another (Hormones)
What does a structural protein do?
Fibers, like hair (Spider webs)
What are the four layers of protein folding? (Structures of a protein)
Primary, Secondary, Tertiary, Quaternary
What is the Primary structure?
smallest, amino acid sequence
What is the Secondary structure?
Coil and patterns: Alpha Helix (coiling, spiral) Or Pleated Sheet (Folded arrangement)
What is Tertiary Structure?
The overall 3D shape, Globular (pleated and helical) or Fibrous (helical)
What is Quaternary Structure?
Results from bonding among subunits. DOESNT EXIST IN ALL PROTEINS.
