Biology-5.1-5.4 Flashcards
What is kinetic energy?
Energy doing the work
What is energy?
Capacity to perform work. Moving matter in a direction it couldn’t alone.
What is potential energy?
Stored energy
What is chemical energy?
Potential energy in the bonds of molecules
What is heat?
Energy accounted with the movement of molecules in a body of matter
What are thermodynamics?
Study of energy transformations
What is a system?
Doing the conversion
What is a surrounding?
Everything around the system
What does the 1st law of thermodynamics state?
Energy stays constant, never created or destroyed only changed
What does the 2nd law of thermodynamics state?
Energy loses usable energy(quality of that energy). Heat is usually created
What is an endergonic reaction?
Required energy input. Produced by dehydration synthesis. Starts with less then ends with more.
What is an exergonic reaction?
Chemical reaction that releases energy. Broken by hydrolysis. Starts with more energy ends with less.
Cellular metabolism
Sum of all endergonic and exergonic reactions.
Energy coupling:
Using energy released from cell during exergonic reaction to drive endergonic reactions. Is a cycle
3parts of ATP:
Adenine, ribose, chain of 3 phosphate groups with weak bonds because they are both neg.
