Biology-Lipids Flashcards
What are the 4 polymers of Lipids?
Triglyceride, Phospholipids, Steroids, and Wax
What is a Triglyceride consisted of? (monomers)
Glycerol and 3 fatty acids
What is a Phospholipid consisted of? (monomers)
Glyverol with 2 fatty acids and a phosphate group
What do steroids consist of? (monomers)
3 6-carbon rings and 1 5-carbon ring
What does wax consist of? (monomers)
1 fatty acid and an alcohol
What are the two types of triglycerides?
One with saturated fatty acids and one with unsaturated.
What is the difference between a saturated fat and an unsaturated fat?
Sat have the max # of hydrogen bonds with no double bonds, unsat have the max # of Hydrogen bonds because of double bonds causing a kink.
What are the function/locations of triglyceride, phospholipids, and steroids?
Tri: Provide energy
Phospho: in Cell Membranes
Steroids: sex hormones
What is the structure of a triglyceride?
H | H - C - OH-(Fatty acid) | H - C - OH-(Fatty acid) | H - C - OH-(Fatty acid) | H
What is the structure of Phospholipids?
Hydrophilic heads consisting of phosphate group on outside with fatty acid tails towards inside because they are hydrophobic.
What kind of fat is solid at room temperature and why?
Saturated, closely packed together cuz no kinks
What kind of fat is better for you?
Unsaturated
