Biology Module 1 Flashcards
Cells
Basic units of life (all have 1 or more)
DNA
Molecules that carry genetic information, cells use it to produce proteins
Five Characteristics of Life
Organization, energy(metabolism), homeostasis, reproduction, growth, development (hereditary) and evolution (adaptation)
In order (smallest to greatest)
Atom
Molecule
Organelle
Cell
Tissue
Organ
Organism
Population
Community
Ecosystem
Biosphere
Emergent Properties
Each level of biological organization components interact to perform tasks
Autotroph
Make their own food
Heterotroph
Obtain energy by eating other organisms
Decomposers
Heterotroph that obtains energy from wastes and dead organisms (bacteria + fungi)
Homeostasis
Internal consistency, process where cell/organism maintain internal equilibrium
Asexual Reproduction
One parent, offspring is genetically identical
Evolution
Genetic change over time in a population
Three Domains of Life
Bacteria, Archaea, Eukarya
Bacteria and Archaea
Consist of small, prokaryotic and unicellular organisms
-No nucleus, has nucleoid
Eukarya
Any organisms with nucleus
Domain, Kingdom, Phylum, Class, Order, Family, Genus, Species
Metabolism
Chemical reactions that allow organisms to acquire and use energy + nutrients to build new structures, repair old ones, and reproduce
Prokaryotes
Their DNA is free in the cell, not confined to nucleus
Standardized variable
Variable investigators intentionally holds constant for all subjects in experiment
Statistically Significant
Indicates high probability
Theory
Explanation for natural phenomenon, broader than hypothesis and widely accepted
Fact
Repeatable and undisputed observation
Scientific Method
- Problem or Observation
- Question
- Hypothesis
- Prediction
- Experiment
- Results
- Conclusion
Consumer
Heterotroph that obtains energy from eating other organisms
Producer
Primary: autotroph that obtains energy & nutrients from nonliving organisms
Eukarya Four Kingdoms
Protista, Plantae, Fungi, Animalia
