Biology: CVD Flashcards
Coronary heart disease: Angina
Angina is experienced when a limited oxygen supply to the heart muscle, the myocardium, is caused by narrowing coronary arteries, which result in pain. This is most common during exercise, as oxygen supply is limited.
Coronary heart disease: Heart attack
A heart attack (myocardial infarction) occurs when cells in the myocardium are completely starved of oxygen, due to blood clots forming in the coronary arteries, cells that do not receive any oxygen can die.
Ischaemic
The myocardium is ischaemic if it is not receiving any blood.
Stroke
When blood supply is cut off to brain cells, they will receive no oxygen and will be damaged. A mini stroke is short term, a full stroke is when blood supply from the arteries is completely cut off, this can be fatal.
