Biology Basics Flashcards
Contains DNA in form of chromosomes surrounded by a nuclear membrane.
Nucleus
Isolates the processes within the nucleus from the processes in the cell itself. Boundary that controls what crosses.
Nuclear Membrane
Inside nucleus, but role is to assemble the cell’s ribosomes.
Nucleolus
Membrane-bound organelle within the cytoplasm (fluid like material in the cell). Generates most of the chemical energy used in biochemical reactors by cells. Contains RNA that is transferred only from the mother.
Mitochondria
Organelle that serves as a transport system.
Golgi Apparatus
Organelle that processes proteins and lipid molecules. Factory organelles of the system.
Endoplasmic Reticulum
Type of ER with a surface studded with ribosomes and translates amino acids into proteins.
Rough ER
Type of ER that releases transport vesicles that contain lipids and proteins, which are surrounded by cell membrane. Move through cytoplasm to cell membrane.
Smooth ER
Membrane-bound organelles that contain cellular digestive enzymes.
Lysosome
Particles made of RNA and protein that are critical for synthesizing/forming proteins.
Ribosomes
