Biology 17.2 Flashcards
Linked Genes
Genes that are found on the same chromosome
Chromosome mapping
The process of determining the relative positions of genes on a chromosome
The further ____ two genes are, the more ____ they would ___
apart
likely
recombine
One Map unit
The distance between points on a chromosome where a crossover is likely to occur in 1 percent of all meiotic events.
Map distance
Distance between genes on a single chromosome
Recombinant types
Without crossover in prophase meiosis 1 these would not exist
Different combinations of alleles than the chromosomes of the P generation.
Sex linked traits
Traits that are controlled by genes on either the X or Y chromosomes.
Y linked traits (3)
- Passed only for males to their sons
- A female cannot be a carrier of a Y linked trait
- Hairy ears
Multiple alleles
A gene with more than two alleles
Blood type
Continuos Traits
Traits for which the phenotypes vary gradually from one extreme to another,
Ex: Height in human, ear length in corn, weight of beans, Skin, eye colour
- Cannot be placed in discrete categories such as colour blind or not colour blind
- vary over a continuum
- Usually controlled by more than one gene
Polygenic traits
Traits that are controlled by many genes
