12.1 Sensory receptors and sensation Flashcards
Sensation
occurs when the neural impulses arrive at the cerebral cortex
when sensory receptors detect sensory stimuli
the process of sensing our surrounding using the five senses
Preception
the process of interpreting the acquired sensations.
sensory adaptation
when the brain filters out redundant insignificant information
- ex: you no longer notice the ticking of a clock or feel the clothes on your skin.
Sensory receptors
specialized cells pr neuron endings that detect specific stimuli
Photoreceptors
- stimulated by light energy
- rods and cones
allow us to sense light and colour
Chemoreceptors
- stimulated by certain chemicals
- ex: tongue and taste buds/olfactory cells that detect ordour in the air
mechanoreceptors
- respond to mechanical forces from some sort of pressure
- ex: hair cells in the inner ear are activated when sound waves cause parts of the inner ear to vibrate
Thermoreceptors
detect heat and cold
