biological molecules lipids (KRJ) Flashcards
what atoms do lipids contain
Carbon
Hydrogen
Oxygen
what are characteristics of lipids
they are non polar molecules they are insoluble in water and soluble in organic solutions
what is a lipids relationship with water
they are hydrophobic, they do not like water
what are the building blocks of lipids
fatty acids and glycerol
how are lipids different to carbohydrates
they do not form polymers
what is a triglycerol
1 glycerol and 3 fatty acids joined by a ester bond
what is a saturated fatty acid chain
they consist of hydrocarbon chains with no c=c double bond in them
COOH group at end
what is a monounsaturated fatty acid
they consist of a hydrocarbon with one c=c double bond
COOH group at end
what is a poly unsaturated fatty acids
a hydrocarbon chain with mkore than on c=c double bond with COOH group at the end
what is a phospholipid
made from glycerol, 2 fatty acids and a phosphate group
what is the use/ function of phospholipids
used to form a phospholipid bilayer (cell membrane)
energy source and metabolic water source
heat insulation
electrical insulation in Schwann cell
fat as a buoyancy acid
what is the function of the head and tail on a phospholipid
head is hydrophilic
tail is hydrophobic
how are phospholipids and triglycerides different
phospholipids have 2 fatty acid chains and a phosphate group but triglycerides have 3 fatty acid chains with no phosphate group
