Biological molecules 6 Flashcards
What are the to charge of water- and what molecule do they correlate to?
Is water polar or non polar?
water is polar
oxygen-slightly negative
hydrogen-slightly positive
What bond is inbetween 2 water molecules? what does it do?
-Hydrogen bonds
-creates a cohision
difference between polar and non polar molecules
polar- negative and positive end,hydrophillic
non polar- 1 charge throughout, hydrohobic
Propeties of water- how is it a good solvent/ metabolite?
-Allows for metabolic reactions such as condesation/hydrolysis and photosynthesis/ respiration
Properties of water-specific heat capactiy
-high specific heat capacity-enables water to gain or lose alot of tempature without temp change
-buffer for temperature
-maintains ocean/temperature of the environment
Properties of water-specific latent heat
-provides a cooling effect
properties of water- cohision
-inbetween watermolecules
-supports column of water
-surface tension
Depth- how is water a good solvent
-good for transportations of minerals
-many ions&other polar molecules can dissolve in it beacause water is dipolar- many charges in substances can be attracted to it
Names 2 polar substances and why they cant dissolve in water
-lipids and large polymers
-hydrophobic(stable bonds)
