biological molecules 2 Flashcards
2 types of lipids
triglyceride and phospholipids
structure of triglycerides
1 glycerol molecule and 3 hydrocarbon fatty acids that form the tail
basic structure of the triglyceride
o=c-r
ho/( connected to c)
o=, ho and c make up carboxylic acid and the r is the tail with can vary
draw example of triglycerol formed by condensation
what is the bond formed in the process
ester bond
define saturated
single bonds inbetween carbons
define unsaturated
atleast one double double carbon bond in the chain
difference between polyunsaturated and monunsaturated
poly- many double double carbon bonds
mono-only one double double carbon bond
define phospholipid
a bilayer in a cell membrane
structure
sames as triglycerides but a phospate group attached to the glycerol and only 2 fatty acids attached
what does the phospate group do
the phospate group is hydrophillic which means its attracted to water
what properties do the hydrocarbon tails have
teh tails are hydrophobic, so the repel water which means they are insoluable in water
structure of the bi layer- draw
outside is the hydrophillic phospate group and inside is the hydrophobic tails so anything soluble in water for cant pass through
what are triglycerides used for
energy storage molecules
describe the emulsion test
3 shake food substance it 2cm^3 of ethanol
pour into distiled water without food substance
milky cloudy colour means fat is present
