Bioenergetics Flashcards
example of coupled reaction
turning glucose into glucose-6-phosphate using the dephosphorylation of ATP
what supports life?
the sun and redox reactions
how do we harness energy?
1) release small quantities of energy at a time
2) couple rxn that releases nrg with second rxn that harvests nrg in usable form (form ATP)
3) redox state change, collect reducing equiv by coupling redox rxns with NADH formation
4) use reducing pwr of NADH to drive ATP production
creatine kinase as a buffer
creatine kinase and phosphocreatine act as a buffer due to equilibrium; creatine tirns into phosphocreatine and then in the gym the phosphate goes to ADP to produce ATP and the muscle is able to use that and creatine is again formed
alphaG equation
alphaG= alphaGnot + RTln([products]/[substrates])
alphaGnot equation
-RTln(Keq)
equilibrium ratio- what each reaction wants to go towards; will use this in enzyme kinetics
