Biodiversity Flashcards
What is biodiversity?
diversity in the hereditary variation across all life forms at the genetic, species, and even ecosystem levels
Species diversity = ?
Species richness + Relative abundance/eveness
What are 3 features in coastal ecosystem diversity?
ocean, forest, mountain
What are the 3 interconnecting levels of diversity and complexity?
the parts, how the parts function, how the parts are organized
What is intrinsic value?
value in and of itself w/o regard for human needs
What is direct value?
products directly consumed by people
What is indirect value?
benefits that do not involve the consumption of resources - recreation and education, ecosystem services
What are Ecosystem services and give a few examples?
The conditions and processes through which natural ecosystems sustain life, including human life - purification of air and water - climate stabilization - crop pollination - soil fertility
Global Gross National Profit (GNP) is how much a year?
How much is ecosystem services worth?
18 trillion
33 trillion/year
Because of human activities how much greater is the current extinction rate than the background rate?
100-1000 x greater
- current rate of loss is unprecedented
What percentage of amphibians is globally threatened by extinction?
41%
Globally what percentage of vertebrates is globally threatened by extinction?
10-20%
What are the threats to biodiversity driven by?
growth and size of human population, human technology and consumption of natural resources
Which is the most biologically diverse region/province in Canada?
BC
What is the difference between red and blue listed species?
red is extirpated, endangered or threatened
blue is special concern
Why do we use latin instead of common name for identification?
common is not standardized and doesn’t indicate relationships (colloquilisms?)
What is the correct way to write genus and species?
Genus capitalized, species uncapitalized all in italics
What are 7 major threats to biodiversity?
climate change, habitat destruction, fragmentation, degradation, overexploitation, exotic species, disease
