Biodiversity 3.1a Flashcards
What is biodiversity?
Biodiversity is a key resource, which provides a range of valuable goods and critical services to human populations.
What is the main threat to biodiversity in Peru?
Biodiversity is often under threat through over-exploitation.
What are the main two factors that give Peru large levels of biodiversity?
It’s high altitude and warm climate.
What region comprises 60% of Peru and is marked by a large degree of biodiversity?
The Amazon rain forest.
What are the 3 subsections to biodiversity?
Genetic diversity, Species diversity and Ecosystem diversity.
What is the importance of genetic biodiversity?
It’s the range of genes found within a specie, which often determines the resistance to pests and
diseases.
Why is species diversity needed in an ecosystem?
It is needed for an ecosystem to be effective, such as undergoing the carbon cycling.
What controls Ecosystem Diversity?
It is controlled by the climate, geology, relief and soils of the area.
How do global factors influence biodiversity?
Continuous biomes can support more species
and large boundaries encourage migration of new species.
Where is biodiversity the greatest?
Biodiversity is the greatest in the oldest and least
disturbed ecosystems such as tropics because there
are a few constraints on productivity.
What does a large altitude region mean?
A large range means a cross section of climates, increasing the diversity of habitats (can be applied to ocean depth as well).
What does an isolated country encourage?
Endemism
What does endemism mean?
The ecological state of a species being unique to a defined geographic location
What is a limiting factor to biodiversity?
Extreme regions restrict growth, because species need to be specially adapted to survive in the hostile environment.
What are the perfect conditions for a growth in biodiversity?
Countries close to the equator where heat, light and moisture are always available and seasonality is minimal.
