3.1b Flashcards
What is Biodiversity?
A key resource, which provides valuable goods and services to human population
Where does the Amazon run in Peru?
East of Andes to the borders of Ecuador, Colombia, Brazil and Bolivia
How much of Peru does the Amazon cover?
60%
What climate is found in the Amazon?
Tropical
What animal lives in the mountainous region
Puma
Define genetic diversity
Range of genes found within a species, often determining resistance to pests and diseases
Use of species diversity
Needed for an ecosystem to be effective (carbon cycling)
Define ecosystem diversity
The number of different ecosystems in an area
Global influences on biodiversity
Size of the area determines amount of an area
Effect of altitude on biodiversity
More climatic = more diversity
Influences of isolation on biodiversity
Number of species is reduced but encourages endemic, as species develop in a particular way
Limiting factors
Extreme regions where factors restrict growth (extreme cold, aridity and lack of sunlight)
Perfect conditions for growth
Close to the equator where heat, light and moisture are available
Endemism
Unique species evolve on islands (Philippines, Indonesia, PNG)
Altitude
Change in temp/rainfall over short distance produce many different ecosystems all with different species
