What is sustainable yield?
The ‘safe’ level of harvest that can be harvested/caught/utilised without harming the individual ecosystem.
What is MSY (maximum sustainable yield)?
The greatest harvest that can be taken indefinitely while leaving the ecosystem intact.
What is OSY (optimum sustainable yield)?
The best compromise achievable in the light of all the social and economic considerations.
Define carrying capacity.
Maximum human population that can exist in equilibrium with the available resources. It can vary seasonally.
Define overshoot.
When a population consumption exceeds the carrying capacity of its environment.
What is the ‘zone of overharvest’?
Taking too much from an ecosystem - unsustainable.
What is the climate like in Komodo?
Tropical but the driest area of Indonesia.
May to October is the dry season at approx. 40 degrees.
Tropical savanna and scrub vegetation (result of human deforestation)
What are some threats to Komodo?
Blast fishing, cyanide fishing, trap setting, reef gleaning, hunting, waste disposal, inappropriate farming practices, internal pop. growth, immigration, uncontrolled tourism, rising sea levels, high poverty

How do people in Komodo make money?
97% income from unreliable, unsustainable fishing
What is threatened as a result of rising sea levels?
Coral bleaching, mangroves, oceans become acidified.
What have the Indonesian government done in terms of management? What conflict has this caused?
Banned leaving deer and goat meat for the Komodo dragons to feed on but the islanders believe the ancestors spirits lie in the dragons so they must leave gifts and sacrifices.
Banned dogs as alien species so locals don’t have any to scare the dragons away.
