biochemistry test review Flashcards
What are the four main Macromolecules?
Carbohydrates, Lipids, Proteins, Nucleic Acids
What is the function of lipids in an organism?
Stored Energy and makes up our Cell membranes
What does the term biosynthesismean and what are some examples?
The process of building one of our Macromolecules by linking the monomers of that molecule together. Example: Linking Amino Acids to build a Protein.
What is a Dehydration synthesis?
Removing water during a reaction to make two or more molecules come together to form one large molecule
What is Hydrolysis?
The adding of water to a reaction to split molecules
What macromolecule is starch?
Carbohydrate
What is the monomer for Carbohydrates?
Monosaccharide
What does a disaccharide consist of?
two sugars
What is a catalyst?
An Enzyme that speeds up reactions
What type of macromolecule is an enzyme?
Protein
Why would you only need small amounts of any one enzyme?
They are reusable
How does a catalyst affect the activation energy?
It lowers it to speed up a reaction
Are enzymes specific to what they act on?
Yes. example: Lactase can only act upon Lactose.
What does it mean for an enzyme to denature?
It breaks down and is not useable.
What is the pH of an acid?
Less then 7 on the PH scale
