Biochemistry Flashcards
What is electronegativity?
The attractive force that an atomic nucleus exerts on electrons.
What is phosphorylation?
The addition of a phosphate group. PO4
What is acylation?
The addition of an acyl group e.g. Methyl.
What is a condensation reaction?
Involves forming a small molecule e.g. Water from the atoms of two molecules.
What is hydrolysis?
Involves adding the components of water to a molecule splitting it in two.
What is esterification?
Condensation reaction between an alcohol and a carboxylic acid.
What is a reducing agent?
It is an electron donor, itself becoming oxidised in the process.
What is an oxidising agent?
An electron acceptor. Itself becoming reduced in the process.
What is the first law of thermodynamics?
Energy is neither created or destroyed.
What is the second law of thermodynamics?
When energy is converted from one form to another, some of the energy becomes unavailable to do work.
What is enthalpy?
Heat.
What is a hydrophobic interaction?
The interaction of polar substances in the presence of non polar e.g. Water.
