Biochemical Tests Flashcards
Test for Reducing sugars
Benedict’s reagent → Heat \+ red/ orange precipitate OR Reagent test strip \+compare with a calibration card
What are reducing sugars?
A sugar that is capable of acting as a reducing agent because it has a free aldehyde group or a free ketone group.
All monosaccharides are reducing sugars, along with some disaccharides
Test for non-reducing sugars
Hydrochloric acid → Heat
Sodium hydrogen carbonate
Benedict’s reagent → Heat
+ red/ orange precipitate
Test for starch
Iodine in potassium iodide
solution
+Blue/black
Test for proteins
Sodium hydroxide
Copper (II) sulphate
+ purple
What are non-reducing sugars?
a carbohydrate that is not oxidized by a weak oxidizing agent
What is starch?
Starch is a polysaccharide comprising glucose monomers joined in α 1,4 linkages
test for lipids
Ethanol
Water → Shake
