Biochemical reactions (German) - week 5 Flashcards
Define a chemical reaction
Changes in molecular structure performed through work
Name the 5 common biochemical reactions
- Making and breaking Carbon bonds
- molecular re arrangements
- free radical rxns
- group transfers
- REDOX rxns
What is a condensation rxn?
(Aldol & Claisen ester) 2 molecules join to create a larger molecule, while also forming a byproduct
-Type of making or breaking carbon bond rxn
What is a free radical?
A molecule containing an unpaired electron
dopamine quinone formation & Vit. E
What is a REDOX RXN
paired of reactions that move electrons to perform work (Reduction requires energy & Oxidation releases energy)
Remember: OIL RIG
What are the 4 ways to transfer e-
- Direct e- transfer
- H atom transfer
- Hydride ions (H-)
- Combination w/ O2
What is free energy?
Free energy is released or consumed to perform work. Anytime a reaction occurs within the body the body uses or releases free energy
How is ATP involved in group transfers?
The more ATP involved in group transfer, the more EFFICIENT it is.
Why are Redox reactions important to biological systems?
Allow for such processes like aerobic respiration to occur. Allow for work to occur and help the body metabolize
