bio test 23 Flashcards
Nervous system - function
Processes & responds to internal and external stimuli
Functionial unit & structural unit
Reflex, neuron
Anatomy - nervous system (9)
- Nucleus
- Cell body (soma)
- Dendrite
- Axon
- Synaptic bulb
- Myelin sheath
- Synaptic cleft
- Vesicle
- Receptors
Central nervous system
Brain, spinal cord
Peripheral nervous system
Nerves
Reflex
- receptor receives information in the form of a stimulus
- travels through sensory neurons (impulse)
- reaches CNS
- travels through motor neuron
- reaches the effector (muscle cell)
- response
Hormonal system (Endocrine) vs Nervous
Hormonal: Older, slower, long-lasting effect, chemicals flow through blood, production glands
Nervous: Newer, faster, short-time effect, electrical impulse for transport of information
Hormones (5)
Adrenaline
Insuline - Glucagon
Testosterone
Estrogen
Adrenaline
Source: adrenal glands
Effect: Fight/Flight(Freeze)
Tries to help you survive - increases heartbeat and sugar in blood
Insuline↓ - Glucagon↑
Source: Pancreas
Effect: Regulates blood sugar level, stored in liver
Convertion between Glucose and Glycogen
Testosterone (male)
Source: testes
Effect: 1. production, maturation of sperm cells
2. sexual characteristics: hair(pubic, facial), voice
Estrogen (female)
Source: ovaries
Effect: 1. production, maturation of egg cells, preparing for fertilization
2. development of breasts
Progesterone
Source: Ovaries
Effect: Preparation for pregnancy
Reproduction - division
Asexual, sexual
Asexual reproduction
One parent
No gametes involved
offspring is identical to parent
Asexual reproduction - example
Binary fission - flatworm
Budding - hydra
Fragmentation - starfish
Spores - fungus
Sexual reproduction
Two parents
Uses gametes
Offspring is not identical to parents
Fusing of gametes - fertilization
Male reproductive system
Male sex cells are produced inside testes (sg. testis)
Sexual reproduction in humans involves sperm cell joining an egg cell (fertilization)
Female reproductive system
Produces egg cells (ova) - female sex cells
Two ovaries produce sex cells and female sex hormones
If an egg cell is fertilized, it develops inside the uterus into a baby
Male reproductive system anatomy
- Testes
1.1 Scrotum - Sperm duct
- Seminal vesicle
- Prostate gland
- Urethra
Female reproductive system anatomy
- Ovaries
- Oviduct
- Uterus
- Cervix
