Bio molecules Inorganic Ions Flashcards
Where can inorganic ions be found?
In cytoplasm and bodily fluids
What are the four main ions in the body?
Iron
Hydrogen
Sodium
Phosphate
What are ions?
Particles with electric charge.
Can be inorganic or organic (contain carbon)
Can be a single atom or a group of atoms
What are the functions of iron?
Used to carry oxygen
In haemoglobin
Fe2+ bind to O atoms
What are the functions of hydrogen ions?
Maintain pH, help with aerobic respiration
Greater concentration H+ lower pH
Important in ATP synthesis in the mitochondria during cellular respiration
Why are H+ important in ATP synthesis?
Low H+ mitochondrial matrix
High H+ mitochondrial membrane
Proton gradient used to generate energy
What are the functions of sodium ions?
Responsible for co-transport + nervous system
~ communication between neurones
Helps glucose + amino acids enter cell - through co-transport eg. Digestive system
What are phosphate ions functions?
Used in cell membrane, DNA, RNA, ATP
Often found in phosphate groups (PO4 3-).
~attached to many bio molecules
In DNA, RNA, ATP energy stored in between bonds between them.
Found in phospholipids which form phospholipid bilayer
