BIO 201 Lab #12: Cranial Nerves ONLY Flashcards
How many pairs of cranial nerves are there?
12
Most cranial nerves innervate structures of the…
head and neck
How many sensory, mixed, and motor nerves are there?
There are 3 sensory nerves, 4 mixed nerves, and 5 motor nerves
What is the cranial nerve name mnemonic?
Oh Once One Takes Their Anatomy Final Very Good Vacations Are Heavenly
Oh = Olfactory Once = Optic One = Oculomotor Takes = Trochlear Their = Trigeminal Anatomy = Abducens Final = Facial Very = Vestibulocochlear Good = Glossopharangeal Vacations = Vagus Are = Accessory Heavenly = Hypoglossal

Type of nerve mnemonic
Some Say Marry Money But My Brother Says Big Brains Matter More
Some = Sensory Say = Sensory Marry = Motor Money = Motor But = Both My = Motor Brother = Both Says = Sensory Big = Both Brains = Both Matter = Motor More = Motor
CN I Olfactory Nerve function
sensory nerve, provides for the sense of smell
CN II Optic Nerve function
sensory nerve, provides for sense of vision
CN IV Trochlear Nerve function
motor nerve, innervates 1/6 extrinsic eye muscle
superior oblique
CN V Trigeminal Nerve function
both sensory and motor, provides sensory innervation for face and motor innervation to muscles of mastication (chewing)
CN VI Abducens Nerve function
motor nerve, innervates final extrinsic eye muscle
lateral rectus muscle
CN VII Facial Nerve function
mixed nerve, innervates motor to the muscles of facial expression, taste to the tongue, motor to the lacrimal glands (produce tears) and sensory to part of the face and mouth
CN VIII Vastibulocochlear Nerve function
sensory nerve, innervates structures of the inner ear and provides for the senses of hearing and equilibrium
CN IX Glossopharyngeal nerve
mixed nerve, provides motor axons to pharynx and sensory axons to the tongue for taste sensation
CN X Vagus Nerve
mixed nerve, only cranial nerve that “wanders” outside the head and neck
sensory innervation to skin of the head and pharynx, motor axons to the muscles involved in speech, swallowing, and salivary glands. Outside the head it innervates most of the thoracic and abdominal viscera (main nerve of the parasympathetic nervous system)
CN XI Accessory Nerve
motor nerve, only cranial nerve that has a cranial component from the brainstem and a spinal component from the spinal cord.
Motor axons innervate the muscles that move the head and the neck (ex. trapezius and sternocleidomastoid muscle)
CN XII Hypoglossal Nerve
mixed nerve, innervates the muscles that move the tongue
** The Hypoglossal nerve moves the tongue but does not provide any taste sensation
