Benign Skin Lesions Flashcards
stages of naevi development?
junctional naevus - clusters of cells at dermo-epidermal junction
compound naevus - clusters of cells at junction and some groups of cells in dermis
intradermal naevus - no cells at junction, entirely in dermis
how are seborrhoeic keratoses managed?
no management needed
can do cryotherapy if needed
shaving or curettage can be used to scrape it off if bigger
what is a dermatofibroma?
proliferation of fibroblasts in dermis
usually after trauma or insect bite etc
features of dermatofibroma?
usually small
very hard nodule
tethered to skin
why are sebaceous cysts often excised?
more often flare up and cause problems
remember to try and get whole sac out intact
where do skin tags usually occur?
on sites of friction
types of non-worrying change in moles?
can have overlying skin conditions (eg guttate psoriasis or pityriasis rosea ofter virus which happens to be over a mole)
can have halo naevi
what are halo naevi?
depigmentation around mole
type of physiological immune response against mole taking many months where the body tries to get rid of the mole
common in young adults
what is a blue naevus?
type of bad looking benign mole
where melanocyes prematurely stop in dermis on way to basal layer during cell development and proliferate in the dermis causing a blue naevus
how do melanocytes usually develop?
originate in neural crest
migrate towards skin and should end up in basal layer
