Two ways in which religion can be seen as a conservative force.
-It’s often seen as conservative in the sense of being ‘traditional.’ Defend traditional values.
-It’s conservative because it functions to conserve or preserve things as they are. It stabilises society and maintains the status quo.
2 examples of traditional conservative beliefs held by religion.
-Abortion.
-Divorce.
How does functionalism view religion as a conservative force?
See religion as a conservative force because it functions to maintain social stability and prevent society from disintegrating.

See religion as a conservative ideology that prevents social change.
How does feminism view religion as a conservative force?
See region as a conservative force as it acts an ideology that legitimates patriarchal power and maintain women’s subordinate in the family and wider society.

Modern capitalism.
What’s unique about modern capitalism?
It’s based on the systematic, efficient rational pursuit of profit for its own sake.
What is the calvinist belief of predestination?
God had predetermined which souls would be saved ‘the elect’- and which’s wouldn’t l, even before birth. God decides who goes to heaven and hell.

God was so far above and beyond this world and so incomparably greater than any mortal, that no human being could possibly claim to know his will.

Living a simple life, completely free from pleasure.

This meant renouncing everyday life to join a covert or monastery. Working hard and being self-disciplined.

-Wealth and success as a sign they were the elect.
-Used money generated from hard work to reinvest in businesses leading to industrialisation.

They weren’t encouraged to persue the calling.
What way did Confucianism fail to encourage capitalism, according to Weber?
They were discouraged the growth of rational capitalism. It was a this-worldly religion that directed it’s followers towards the material world.
3 criticisms of Weber.
-Capitalism didn’t develop in ever country where there was calvinists.
-Weber overestimates the role of ideas and underestimates economics factors.
-Calvinists were among the first capitalists, this wasn’t because of their beliefs.
