*Behavioural Sciences Flashcards
What is a system?
A set of interacting and interdependant elements that function as a whole towards a goal
What is human factors/ ergonomics?
The scientific discipline concerned with the understanding of the interactions among humans and other elements of a system (also to do with designing a system)
What are the domains in human factors/ ergonomics? (3)
Physical ergonomics - how we physically interact with a system
Cognitive ergonomics - mental processes and how they affect the system
Organisational ergonomics - optimisation of sociotechnical systems
What is Reason’s Swiss Cheese Model?
Every slice of a system has weaknesses that can lead to failure
The holes represent potential weaknesses at each particular slice
Some holes are active (people making mistakes) and some are latent (weaknesses inherent in the system)
Sometimes the holes in each slice line up and failure is inevitable
What are a certain type of skill that is involved in human factors?
Non-technical skills e.g. situation awareness, decision making, communication, managing stress, etc.
What are the 3 main cognitive non-technical skills?
Situation awareness
Decision making
Task management
What does SEIPS stand for?
What is this?
Systems Engineering Initiative for Patient Safety - framework linking how the system has an affect on the process that you provide as healthcare providers and the final outcomes
What are the 3 main parts of the SEIPS framework?
Work system
Processes
Outcomes
What are the 3 parts of the processes in the SEIPS framework?
Professional work
Collaborative work
Patient work
