Define Behaviour Activation

A

Intervenes in cycle by Increasing pleasurable activities to lift the mood.

The model assumes that depression is caused by peoples behavior that is punishing rather than rewarding or when reduced access to positive due to avoidance.

Behaviour in depression is often avoidance

A

Avoidance - is a way of coping (inactivity and withdrawal). Attend to the function of these behaviors. Not good long term coping as narrows behaviors causing other problems in life

Examples of avoidance

A

Staying in bed, avoiding work, not socialising, due to lethargy causes work and relationship problems and performance problems and disrupts routine.

A

Increase activity, reduce avoidance and increase likelihood of rewards

Change is based on the context in which depression is experienced

A

Measures and ABC self monitoring - current mood and activities ( mood, achievement, connection)
Psychoed about lowered mood and lowered activity and withdrawal and lowered rewards maintaining and negative consequences
Formulation and function of depressive behaviour
Activation strategies way of breaking the cycle - individualised steps to engage and solve problems - may include BE’s to just see what happens regardless of mood
Goal setting
Schedule activity - small goals first (the chart is beh driven not mood-driven)
Address barriers to activity
