Q

Insufficient pollination/ fertilization

A

Apple has 5 chambers in which seeds develop

Effective pollination: Pollen must more between different apple varieties

No fertilization, no seeds, lopsided apples

Q

Parasitic mites: Varroa desertctor

A

Most serious pest of honey bees world wide

Mated female mite enters the cell with mature large and reproduces on pupa, then bites bees and drinks the blood. Then viruses get transferred from bee to bee

Q

Deformed wing virus: effect on leaves

A

Varro mites transform DWV to larvae when adult mites feed on body fluids of leaves

Shrivelled wings were first believed to be caused by mite feeding

Now known ti be due to deformed wing virus

Mites without viruses have very little effect on bees

Q

Pesticides

A

Toxic in mixtures

Detoxification of pesticides reduce immune function

Neonics are heavily used, lost accumulates in environment and soil
