Bees Flashcards
How many of our crops depend on bees
1/3
How many species of bees, how many workhorses
400, 1 (honey bee. easy to move, was to work with )
Pollination
Movement of pollen from anther to stigma (not the same thing as fertilization
how many bees do we need
1-3 colanies (10000-30000 bees) per career needed for adequate pollination
Wild bees
Often better pollinators but there are not as many of them
Insufficient pollination/ fertilization
Apple has 5 chambers in which seeds develop
Effective pollination: Pollen must more between different apple varieties
No fertilization, no seeds, lopsided apples
Why are there not enough bees
Bees are sick q
Why are bees sick
Poor nutrition Pasasitic mites Viruses Gut paracites Paracites Stress Weather Immunity
Parasitic mites: Varroa desertctor
Most serious pest of honey bees world wide
Mated female mite enters the cell with mature large and reproduces on pupa, then bites bees and drinks the blood. Then viruses get transferred from bee to bee
Deformed wing virus: effect on leaves
Varro mites transform DWV to larvae when adult mites feed on body fluids of leaves
Shrivelled wings were first believed to be caused by mite feeding
Now known ti be due to deformed wing virus
Mites without viruses have very little effect on bees
Pesticides
Toxic in mixtures
Detoxification of pesticides reduce immune function
Neonics are heavily used, lost accumulates in environment and soil
Nutrition of bees
Bees fed a mixture of pollens from different plant sources have more active immune systems than those fed only one type of pollen
neonics
Systemic insecticides are translocated through the plant (kills insects)
Kills bees by accident
