Basics of the CNS Flashcards
What does the CNS develop from embryologically?
ectoderm
What are the basic components of the CNS?
Cerebral hemispheres
brainstem and cerebellum
spinal cord
What is the regeneration like in the CNS?
its can’t regenerate
What are the basic components of the PNS?
-dorsal and ventral roots
spinal nerves peripheral nerve
What is the regeneration like in the PNS?
it can regenerate
What does the brainstem consist of?
midbrain
pos
medulla
What is the midbrain?
area of the brain where eye movements and reflex responses to sound and vision stimuli occur
What is the pons?
bulging bit of the brainstem that controls feeding and sleep
What is the medulla?
where you find cardiovascular and respiratory centres and it contains a major motor pathway
What is the major motor pathway?
the pyramids in the medulla are where decussation occurs (crossing over) - once a signal passes here it travels to the opposite side of the body to the side of the brain it came from
What is the optic chiasm?
a site where fibres in the visual system cross over (on the inferior aspect of the cerebral hemisphere)
What is the uncus?
part of the temporal lobe that can herniate compressing the midbrain and potentially, cranial nerves
What is the corpus callosum?
large white matter full of axons that transerve and link parts of the 2 hemispheres together
