Basic Principles Flashcards
What are the three hormone subtypes?
Proteins and peptides
Steroids
Tyroine and tryptophan derivatives
What are the four basic hormone receptors
G-protein coupled receptors
Receptor Tyrosine Kinase Families
Steroid Hormone receptors
Receptors associated with tyrosine kinase activity
What are the main sensors of the internal enviroment?
G-protein coupled receptors
Name two receptors which are cytokine receptors (linked to tyrosine kinase activity)
Prolactin receptor
Growth hormone receptor
Where do you find steroid hormone receptors?
Intracellular - cytoplasm or nucleus
How do steroid hormones bring about change?
Steroid/receptor complex binds to DNA response elements resulting in changes in gene transcription
Where does Prolactin come from?
Secreted by Lactotroph cells of the anterior pituitary
How is prolactin production controled ?
under tonic inhibition by hypothalamic dopamine
