Basic Model of Information Processing Flashcards
What is it?
The simple processes that the performer carries out in order to decide what skill to use.
Beginnners tend to?
Attempt to perform a skill the same way every time where as elite sportspeople are able to vary how they use skills e.g. a tennis serve.
What is the Cycle?
INPUT> decision making> OUTPUT>feedback
Input:
Performer takes in information from the display via their senses. e.g. what they can see, hear, feel etc.
They select what is appropriate and discard what is not = SELECTIVE ATTENTION
Decision making:
The performer selects an appropriate response (movement/skill)
They may use a reponse they have used before.
What is Short-term Memory (STM)?
Held for 30seconds, if your attention is diverted to something else, the information is lost.
What is Long-term Memory (LTM)?
Holds information that has been rehearsed and stored.
If a memory is relevant…?
It is compared to information in the STM so that a suitable decision can be made.
Output:
The decision is sent to the appropriate muscles to carry out the response.
e.g. impulses sent to hand and arms to get in correct position for a catch.
Feedback:
Information is received within themselves (intrinsic) and/or others (extrinsic).
Feedback is received whilst you are doing the skill as well as after.
Feedback may affect how you perform the skill in the future.
e.g. you can feel the ball in your hands (intrinsic) and hear your teammates cheer (extrinsic).
Example?
NETBALL CENTRE PASS:
Input: Feel the ball in your hands, block out the noise= selective attention.
Decision making: Choosing what type of pass to do, and who to.
Output: Physically carrying out the pass.
Feedback: Usiing the senses to determine whether it was a good pass (intrinsic & extrinsic).
